HISTORY As the firstborn son of the King of Kanemoria, from the beginning of his days, Julian was expected to learn the intricacies of politics, and of Kanemorian politics, in particular. He enthusiastically attended his studies, showing from the start a bright wit and the beginnings of a charismatic personality that allowed him to win most people over without even trying. As a result, as he grew, his popularity with the people grew with him, his knack for compelling speech and sincere demeanor indicating to his people that surely he would be next in line for the throne, and who would complain? He had all of the makings for a suitable King, after all.
What few knew, or let on that they knew, was that in the wake of the trauma of witnessing the accidental murder of his own mother, their High Prince became perfectly content living a life encased by his own fragile delusions of safety and security -- forcibly suppressing and forgetting the darker sides of his position, his country, and his countrymen, in particular. Kanemoria's Mistress of Spies and several of her highest ranking pawns -- including Julian's on again off again paramour, Lady Fayre -- took swift advantage of this situation, easily controlling and deceiving him (though luckily for him, they had only his best interests, at heart.)
Unfortunately, no one suspected that Julian's younger brother, Tristel, had taken to taking advantage of Julian's self-imposed naivety in a far different manner. He fooled everyone into believing him a harmless eccentric, while secretly plotting to murder Julian and take the title of High Prince and heir-presumptive for himself. This was averted at the last possible second, mostly through Fayre's own efforts, culminating on the Festival of Fools where Fayre confronted and subsequently killed Tristel before Julian's very eyes.
This effectively shattered all of the shields Julian had meticulous built around himself over the years, opening his eyes to the vulnerabilities it left in him -- and the realization that he was hardly in control of his own life at all. Furious and hurt and believing himself betrayed by the ones he trusted most, he withdrew into himself for a time, shutting everyone else out while he worked through his own issues -- and made some tough decisions, besides.
When he emerged from this, Julian seemed an entirely different person; direct, purposeful, and even cunning. He has slowly regained many of his previous characteristics -- his charisma, for one, and all the courtly courtesies that go along with it -- though none will argue that their High Prince has not been somehow irreversibly changed. Under Mydra's close instruction, though he is often at odds with her of late as well, he has thrown himself into learning the ropes of the tangles and intrigues of Kanemoria's political spider web, gained a good deal of his own instinct and independence, and renewed his pursuit of magical arts for the sake of self defense (and offense, if required.)

PERSONALITY Julian was once a naive man, exuding a simple sort of charm, cheer, and child-like optimism, largely ignorant of the nuances of politics and utterly blind of courtly intrigues and conspiracies. His life was dictated almost entirely by his father, his friends, and of course, Kanemoria's Mistress of Spies, and he never seemed to particularly mind.
Following the death of his younger brother and the revelations that event presented to him, he has become a much different person; his optimism is replaced with a cheerfully sardonic air, and his naivete has been mostly replaced with a grim determination to learn, understand, and adapt. He is as courteous and charismatic as ever -- some might argue he has strangely become better at this, in some ways, even -- but everything he does is tinged now with a hint of grim purpose.

APPEARANCE Nothing about Julian's appearance readily indicates his status; he looks more like a collected scholar than a prince. Short black hair and dark blue eyes accented by sensible specatacles give an impression of scholarly intelligence; his brilliant smiles and animated posturing compel people to listen when he talks, and his softer, more reassuring smiles leave no doubts in the minds of most people of his sincerity and good intentions. He stands at roughly 5'10" and is built with a slight frame; he's not a complete dunce when it comes to physical pursuits, though he much prefers the study of magic.
